Why are speech and drama lessons important for your child?

The average person communicates 80% of the time through speaking and listening, and around 20% through reading and writing. Research has shown that the optimum time to build these necessary skills is in pre-school and throughout the primary learning years.

Speech and drama activities facilitate your child’s learning process by motivating him or her to think, listen and speak clearly by participating in activities such as riddles, tongue twisters, role play, mime, games, voice projection, improvisation, speech exercises and stories. Furthermore, the confidence speech and drama instills in your child is something he or she will carry for life and will be incredibly helpful to him/her at school and ultimately in his/her career.

The Total Literacy I Can Act lessons require students to contribute to writing the scripts which they will perform in a final presentation.

Speech and drama lessons are designed to:

• build confidence in your child by enabling him or her to practise oral expressive skills;
• communicate freely in a social setting;
• model conventional and grammatically correct speech patterns;
• ensure clarity of articulation;
• use language and bodily expressive techniques as tools for communicating;
• introduce students to script writing and performing their own work.
